THE CAMERON AWARD

Part of the MoS Great Exhibition

New for 2024

Julia Margaret Cameron was a pioneering early photographer in the 19th Century who concentrated upon the artistic content of her images rather than simply recording what was before her. Our new photography award is named in her honour.

Steampunk has long had a complicated relationship with photographers. The best photographers - whether or not they are steampunks themselves - ask permission before taking photos and work in harmony with their subjects. They also share their photos with the steampunk community and make them available to their models. In return many steampunks are happy to pose for your pictures.

The Ministry of Steampunk has always been eager to foster the best possible relationship between steampunks and photographers and to celebrate your work, at Asylum XIV we invite you to submit up to 3 photographs to be shortlisted for ‘Asylum photograph of the year’.

The photographs must have been taken at Asylum 2023 or a subsequent MoS event. (Hulloween, New Year, Tutbury Fairytale or Blists Hill.)

If you would like to enter the competition please get in touch using the form below by 1 August 2024. On receipt of your enquiry we will provide an email address to which you may submit digital images.

A total of ten images will be shortlisted and the photographers will be invited to display prints up to 10 x 8 inches size as part of the Great Exhibition in the Castle Prison*.

The winning entry will be selected by judges appointed by but independent of the MoS and will be presented with one of the ministry’s special Award for Creativity Medals.

It will be a condition of entry that the subject has consented to being photographed and that entries may be used to promote future MoS events.

We wish you all the very best of luck in this competition and look forward to your work being celebrated as part of the U.K’s largest steampunk festival.

*The Great Exhibition is open only to steampunk festival wristbands holders.
