Introduction

Julia Margaret Cameron was a pioneering photographer in the 19th Century who concentrated upon the artistic content of her images rather than simply recording what was before her - as seen in this image 'May Day' from 1886.

The Cameron Award at AXV

The Ministry of Steampunk has always been keen to foster the best possible relationship between steampunks and photographers. With this in mind, in 2024 we introduced The Cameron Award to our roster of Creativity Award medals which are awarded to the best entries in The Great Exhibition each year.

We will be running the award again at AXV in 2025 but this time with the generous help and support of Jane and Adrian Lines, longstanding members of the community and experienced photographers themselves. Jane and Adrian will be responsible for collating the entries, organising the judging (independent on the MoS), printing and presenting the shortlisted images at The Great Exhibition.

Competition entry

We invite the submission of photographs which must have been taken at one of the Ministry of Steampunk events during or since Asylum XIV in 2024 - so that includes photographs from Asylum XIV (2024) Steampunk Halloween III (2024), Steampunk New Year, Steam Trains and Fairytales at Butterley (2025) and The Town That Never Was at Blists Hill (2025).

You may enter up to four photographs for consideration. A total of up to ten images will be selected to be printed and displayed at The Great Exhibition. The winner will be announced and awarded one of our coveted numbered Creativity Award medals at the closing ceremony on Monday at Asylum XV and will also have their image printed A3 and mounted on 50 x 40 cm board as part of tthe prize.

It is a condition of entry that the subject consented to be photographed and that the image may be used  by the Ministry of Steampunk for promotional purposes.

The Great Exhibition takes place in a festival wristband-only area so only wristband holders are eligible to have their photograph displayed and judged as one of the final 10 images. You may submit photographs to the competition without being a festival wristband holder but if you do not already have a wristband and your image is selected as one of the final 10 you will need a wristband in order to have your photograph displayed and to potentially win The Cameron Award.
